Are your wisdom teeth starting to give you trouble? Wisdom teeth were likely a helpful tool for our distant ancestors, but today, they seem to do more harm than good in many cases. There are various reasons why your wisdom teeth could be causing you pain. Continue reading to learn more about wisdom teeth, why they hurt, and what you can do to get some relief.

Gum Disease

Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and hold the teeth in place. It is caused by uncontrolled plaque. When the gums become infected, it results in inflammation, bleeding, and severe effects, like gum recession and tooth loss. When the wisdom teeth grow at different angles, they create space where debris and plaque can accumulate and become difficult to clean. Over time, this increases your risk of gum disease.

Cavities

Plaque can accumulate in the enamel of the tooth’s outer layer. If it isn’t removed within a timely manner, it turns into tartar. This tough substance needs to be removed with dental tools by a dentist or hygienist. This can result in tooth decay over time. While tooth decay can be prevented by proper oral hygiene, wisdom teeth can make it difficult to clean the teeth thoroughly.

Damage to the Surrounding Teeth

When left untreated for too long, gum disease and cavities can spread to other teeth, causing more extensive issues throughout the mouth. If left to progress, bacteria can reach the pulp of the tooth. This is where the blood vessels and nerves are located, so this can be very painful. By removing the wisdom teeth, you can reduce this risk.

Cysts & Tumors

Fluid can accumulate between the top of the wisdom tooth and the enamel if they are embedded. These cysts don’t have any symptoms, but can expand the dental follicle, leading to issues down the road. Cysts also exert pressure on surrounding teeth, nerves, and jawbones. This can even push the teeth out of their alignment.

Wisdom teeth can cause so many problems if you aren’t careful. If you are feeling pain related to your wisdom teeth, bring this up to your dentist. By taking care of this issue now, you can avoid much discomfort in the future!
