The PILLAR Implant Procedure
![]() |
The Pillar procedure is marketed by Restore Medical . Dr. Steele is part of Restore Medical's doctor network trained in the placement of Pillar implants. He was the first Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon to perform the Pillar procedure in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex. |
Pillar implants are small tubes made of Dacron polyesther. This material has been used in medicine for decades. The FDA approved this procedure for the treatment of snoring and more recently approved it for the treatment of mild to moderate severity sleep apnea. |

The implants are inserted into the soft palate with the insertion device. This is done with local anesthesia or you can be sedated for the procedure. The procedure takes about 15-20 minutes and you can go back to work or home immediately after the procedure. Most patients only take Ibuprofen or Tylenol for minor discomfort after the procedure but a stronger prescription is given just in case. The implants heal with a capsule around them. This capsule, in turn, stiffens the soft palate reducing the vibration during breathing. |
Statistics show that the Pillar procedure is successful 75-80% of the time for snoring and/or mild to moderate sleep apnea. There are certain exclusionary factors that Dr. Steele will discuss with you at the initial appointment. Most patients can have the procedure done the same day as the consultation. The Pillar procedure is different from other treatments for snoring in that it is reversible, its ease of recovery, its low cost, only local anesthesia needed, and it has a high success rate.
